There are some really cool writing support tools out in the world. One type I see often are websites and apps that auto-generate writing for you. In this week’s episode, I get curious about whether this kind of tool is a friend or foe in your writing journey. Here is a sneak peak at some of the core ideas I share: You might not actually need these toolsIt promotes a “should” mentality and often comes from “lack” Might cause you to bypass the powerful work of getting connected to core messages Your audience can tell when the words are not genuinely yoursIf you do use these, when and how to use them effectivelyUltimately, you have to decide what’s best for you, but I think you’ll learn my view by the end of the episode. As always, leave us a review so that more people see the podcast and get the writing support they need. I get a LOT of ads about professing claims like…“I wrote my book in a weekend and now I want to share my simple template for you to do the same!” OR “My clients write their books in 36.2 hours on average and you can do the same.” I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of feeling like I have to speed through everything. Bigger, faster, harder is not always the best thing. For writing, it’s often what pushes people away from writing and sharing their writing with others. So, in this week’s episode, I share the well-known Navy Seal slogan, “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast,” and explain how this approach is an alternative to the write as fast as possible plans. I share how the pressure to write quickly: Doesn't always result in the best writingDoesn’t fit most heart-centered, mission-driven folksOften encourages bypassing the very healing parts of writingAs always, leave us a review so that more people see the podcast and get the writing support they need. “Is it good?”...“Just tell me what to fix.” These are often the ways we’ve learned to ask for feedback on our writing. Yet, neither of these requests are very helpful when writing your book. In this week’s episode, I break down 4 powerful types of writing feedback to ask based on the stage of writing you are in and your writing needs: No response or just “thank you” Pointing or center of gravitySummary and sayback What was almost said and what I wanted to hear more aboutListen as I break down all of these response types, which I have adapted over the years from Peter Elbow and Pat Belanoff’s awesome composition book, Being A Writer. Shout out also to my dear friend and former colleague, Dr. Jennifer Buckner, for creating the awesome PDF that gave me a condensed version of what Elbow and Belanoff created in their book. I talk from this PDF in this episode (message me if you’d like a copy!).As always, leave us a review so that more people see the podcast and get the writing support they need. When we are writing, we are often sharing things we’ve said before or written before. We are writing things we teach over and over. We write stories and experiences that we’ve shared before. Then, when we go to revise and edit our words, it can be difficult to really “see” whether our words are landing and coming across as we want. Why? Because at this point, we’ve read and reread these words so many times that our brains actually fill in any gaps, even see and read things that aren’t actually on the page. Crazy, right? So, in this week’s episode, I share a little bit about why this happens and how to take an idea from qualitative research methods and data collection to help us make these words that are so close to us seem strange and new. Why? Because it gives us the distance we need to revise like a champ! As always, leave us a review so that more people see the podcast and get the writing support they need.
